Like a good piece of furniture, wood canvas canoes are designed to facilitate repairs and rejuvenation.
We have rebuilt canoes which have been run over by cars, crushed by falling trees, scorched by vandals, blown off car roof racks and smashed around on bedrock by severe winds. One canoe was prematurely cut in half for bookshelves and we were asked to put it back together.
Sometimes there are unfortunate collisions with rocks while running a rapid. Most frequently, though, the canvas has done its time, or the canoe has been poorly stored in damp situations. We are never reluctant to say when we think a repair or rebuilding job is going to be too costly.
